A new movie deriver is live now that will handle non-4:3 aspect ratio films now! Specifically, it will make "wider" films derive wider and appear wider now.

I've searched out most movies with "16 9" or "widescreen" in them and have rederived them. (If you have widescreen items you'd like me to rederive please just reply to this with an identifier and I'll take care of it!)

nicely now we will "stretch" horizontally the flash variant (since we "fit" our flash while
keeping the desired aspect ratio)
and will "black bar" the AnimGIF, thumbs, MPEG1, MPEG4s
(since those are sort of "framed" to be 4:3 ratio).

for flash, we actually derive to a wider format, eg: 424x240.
our website makes a 600x240 "window" and the flash plugin "fits" to that
window while preserving aspect ratio. eg:

since flash is our most common presentation format now, it's nice that we can stretch out horizontally -- even superwide videos work like:

for ubergeeks, we also deal properly when the video is "rectangular pixel" (most commonly seen in anamorphic DVD MPEG streams and DV video -- we convert to a "square pixel" dimension...)

enjoy!

fixed! (for now "re-derived" your item using a test environment)

testing of updated video tools is going well, we hope to have it deployed and live w/i weeks...

sorry about that inconvenience!

hi there,

OK it's on our end. well, that is, you encoded with a more recent movie format than our current tools can deal with.

we have been wanting to upgrade our video processing software for a bit now and this gives us a good incentive.

with an updated tool (testing mode, not live), i'm getting the correct widescreen intended ratio.

it will take us some time to roll this out -- probably on the order of weeks (hopefully not months) since we have to test a barrage of video inputs 8-)

meanwhile, i'll rederive your item since we know/think it should work on that one... 8-)

Wonderful. I tried to re-derrive the film, but it still comes out the wrong size. The film is "Me and Julio" sung by Ryan McHugh (submitted under my name because I recorded it).
